Five on Friday!

First, I want to say thank you to all of you who reached out to me in response to my Day in the Working Mama Life post! You certainly made me feel like I have my stuff together when truthfully I oftentimes feel like a huge mess, succeeding in one area only to fail in another. So thank you for all your kind words!

And to the stay at home mamas who sent me kudos on "doing it all"...HA! I have something to say to you (which I have already told many of you offline)...

Dear Mamas, I don't know how YOU do it. No, seriously. You operate on the same amount of sleep that I do but without child-free coffee runs throughout the day. Your clients require 24 hour assistance with sippy cup refills, potty escorts and so much more. Throughout the day I work on projects with deadlines and you work on a toddler schedule. While I run from conference calls to meetings, you are busy running from play dates to play grounds to keep your kiddos engaged and happy. You don't get paid time off or sick days. And while you don't miss any of your baby's "firsts," you also don't miss a diaper change, a feeding or a tantrum. You pick up endless messes, your home is loud all day and your "breaks" are for eating or showering. So while our days may look different, you are the true hero and I admire you so!
one. Pampers Points! We recently redeemed TWO YEARS of Pampers Points for a tricycle for Caroline! If you are a Pampers user you should absolutely be submitting your points! Like many of you we spend a fortune each month on diapers and wipes. So with two kids in diapers it is easy to rack up the points. We cashed in 6,500 points for the tricycle and gave it to Caroline for her birthday. And she loves it. If you also have 2+ kids in diapers (or even 1 kid) you may be thinking "I don't have time to cut codes off packaging, log-in to the Pampers website to submit a code for 30 points!" I agree with ya, mama! I rip the codes off the packages as we go through them and store them in a little pile. When I have 2 free minutes I use my Pampers app to scan them all in at once. Done. And now we have a free tricycle for the kids to fight over.
two. Austin's Dig-it 2nd Birthday Party! Last weekend Caroline celebrated her best friend from school 2nd birthday. Upon arrival each kiddo received a shovel to dig in mini pools filled with sand and bugs and insects! They also received canvas aprons to collect their bugs in. I've never seen Caroline so excited about a scorpion, centipede, spider, etc. We will totally be adding some bugs and insects to our sand boxes for Thomas' birthday party. Such a cute party theme!
three. Matt and I cut carbs recently so we've been eating a LOT of meat, which means I've been frying lots of bacon. I love using the tip of running your bacon under water before cooking to reduce shrinking and I've totally seen a difference! And it seems to cook better!

four. Last week we attended Food Truck Friday with 8 other families. It was SO HOT, maybe too hot, but all of the kids had a great time running around, eating grilled cheese and chips. And they collapsed into bed without a fight.
five. I've loved hearing from many of you that you purchased Couples Table Topics for your next date night!! I also wanted to let you know that Table Topics comes in lots of other sets too - Girls Night Out, Family, Grandparents, Teen, Cocktail, Therapy, Road Trip, Dinner Party and more!!! There's really an edition for every occasion and these make for fun gifts too!

Happy weekend friends!

A Day in the Working Mama Life

The last time I gave you all a peek into our daily routine was two years ago while I was on maternity leave...with Caroline! Oh my, how times have changed!

So I'm going to do my best to capture what a "typical" day looks like for us right now, but know that no two days are ever the same with our unpredictable kiddos. Also, in full disclosure, it took me like a week to write this post and take all the pictures because well, a typical day is just too crazy to document it all!

6:30 am: Daddy is up and in the shower. Mommy sleeps in until she hears banging on the walls from one or both of the kids' rooms.
7 am: Caroline is up but lucky for us she will sing and play in her crib for awhile before she starts calling for "Daddy!!!!" (Yes, it's always dadddy). Meanwhile Thomas is rolling around his crib giggling or bouncing and slapping the wall. I hop out of bed and quickly brush my teeth, get my makeup started and pick out my outfit. I grab Tom Tom and take a little field trip to Caroline's room so they can hug it out and play in her crib for a minute, or vice versa.

7:30 am: Both kids are glued to Elmo or Mickey Mouse in hi-chairs in our bedroom eating a banana or mandarin oranges with grits, or oatmeal or frozen pancakes, whatever daddy has whipped up. We also wrestle a patch on Tom Tom's right eye. He removes it. We re-patch. Also during this time both Matt and I are attempting to get ready while keeping an eye on both kids who are now threatening to jump out of their hi-chairs.
7:45 am: Mom and dad are dressed and ready, sort of. Time to strip the kids out of their breakfast covered clothes. Either Matt or I will negotiate with the kids to put on clothes and lather them in sunscreen. The other packs the daycare bags and load the car. Once that battle is won we let them completely destroy the living room or jump on their bed for about 10 minutes while I fry up some egg sandwiches to-go for me and Matt. We also finish getting dressed and ready during these last few minutes.
8 am: Out the door by 8 am on a good day! Matt and I rotate daycare drop-off and pick-up depending on our schedules that day. We leave at the same time and take opposite turns at the end of our street. We sing all of Caroline's song requests during the one mile ride to daycare.
8:10 am: Arrive at daycare. Unload kids. Spend way too much time supervising Caroline scrubbing in at the hand washing station. Two pumps of soap. Water. More soap. More soap. More soap. Rinse. Done. Hopefully. Sign Caroline in her class and say goodbyes. Most of the time she doesn't care that I'm leaving but every now and then she'll give an oscar-winning meltdown performance. Run across the hall to sign Thomas into class, play on the floor with him for a bit and then say goodbye when it's time for his (second) breakfast.

8:30 am: Head to the office and stop for coffee on the way. If I am not on drop-off, I am arriving to the office at this time and grab coffee with my fellow bottomless mug friend.
9 am - 5 pm: A pretty standard day is filled with conference calls, meetings, event planning, compiling pitch materials, coffee runs and more. Most days I work through lunch but every now and then I'll meet Matt or a girlfriend for lunch. I also use my lunch break to run any errands I prefer to do sans-kids (ex: Target).

5:00 pm: Pack up and head to daycare!

5:30 pm: Arrive to daycare and pick up the kiddos (the very, very, very best part of my day)! I love hearing about their day, reviewing their artwork and learning why Caroline received a stamp that day. Convince Caroline to get in her car seat with a snack bribe, usually a graham cracker, goldfish or yogurt melts.

5:45 pm: Arrive home, change and load up the wagon with dinner/snacks for a walk around the neighborhood. Daddy arrives home and changes.
Favorite on-the-go pre-dinner snacks and dinners include Uncrustables, Lunchables, string cheese, fruit and veggie pouches, cheerios, peanut butter crackers, raisins, string cheese, snack keepers of black beans, fruit, etc.
6 pm: Off for a walk! Most of the time we can get a very slow mile in before meltdowns begin but sometimes Caroline abandons the wagon at the furthest point from our house and is adamant about walking home at -2 mph.

6:30 pm: Arrive home. Provide leftovers for dinner for the kids. Play for ~15 minutes if the kids are in good spirits. If they are melting down we immediately begin baths.
7 pm: Bath time! I begin prepping dinner for me and Matt while he bathes both kids together.

7:15 pm: Begin bed time. Either Matt will put both kids down so I can finish cooking dinner or I'll put Thomas down while Matt puts Caroline down.

8 pm: Kids down! Not necessarily asleep but definitely down after many rounds of books, songs, a sip of water, prayers and other random things that have fallen into the bedtime routine along the way. Matt and I finish cooking and eat dinner, pick up the living room disaster, pack lunches for the next day, flip laundry, clean the kitchen. I shower at night so I can sleep in as long as possible in the morning

*Note: Waiting to eat dinner with Matt until after the kids are in bed has been huge for us. This is sometimes the only time of day we actually get to catch up uninterrupted and without distractions. No TV, no work emails, just conversation over a quick dinner.

9 pm: On a good day we are collapsing into bed by 9, but sometimes even earlier! Fire up laptops to finish work for Matt or blogging (and sometimes work) for me! Watch 3-9 minutes of a TV show (that Matt usually has not agreed on) and pass out by 10 pm. Matt passes out way later.
---

Like most of you, our days are filled to the brim! And as you can see, choosing to be a two-career family means there really isn't that much time we get with our kiddos during the work week. However, we really embrace the weekends with our minis and try to cram in as much family stuff as possible while also catching up on laundry, grocery shopping, errands, etc.

I know being a working mama isn't for every family but I'm really happy with how we've made it work for ours. I honestly owe most of the credit to my amazing husband for being such a rock star daddy, credit to my insanely understandable and flexible working mama boss and credit to our daycare facility and teachers who send me pictures, texts and updates throughout the day to let me know how loved my kids are.

Five on Friday!

Hello Friday! I am so excited for a great weekend ahead! On the books for this weekend...Food Truck Friday with a bunch of friends, a visit to our neighborhood farmer's market, Caroline's best friend's 2nd birthday party, a play date and more!
one. Earlier this week we took the kiddos up to see daddy's new office! Marcellino & Tyson is now officially open for business in Dilworth! I could not be more proud of Matt and Bryan for outgrowing their last office. They now have 4 attorneys, 2 paralegals, excellent support staff and big plans to continue expanding! It's been so exciting watching them grow.

two. On Monday night I flew home to see my dad for a few days. My sister came over too and it was so good for us to spend time with him while also constantly nagging him to follow the doctor's orders. He was so shocked and happy that I surprised him and I think it was exactly what he needed

Just a few days before Christmas dad came down with a serious cold and was hospitalized for several weeks after developing an infection. Mom had begun preparing our family Christmas dinner but threw it in the freezer once dad was sent to the hospital. None of us were interested in eating without him. Well, while I was home mom thawed our Christmas dinner and we finally got to enjoy it as a family!
One quick picture before I flew back home!
three. We've had some really exciting visitors at our house -- CATERPILLARS! Caroline received a Butterfly Garden Growing Kit for her birthday and for the past week we've been watching the butterfly metamorphosis! Caroline's class just recently released their class butterflies so she's totally in to having her own garden to supervise and name.

four.  Ever since my minis came along I've had a hard time finding a bible study. Most of my mama friends stay at home and attend a bible study together on Tuesday right in the middle of the morning, an impossible time for me to break away from work on a weekly basis. So when my friend Lisa sent me an invitation to join The Husband Project, an online 21 day study from Proverbs31 Ministries, I was really excited, signed up and purchased my book! The study kicks off June 20 and I'm inviting anyone looking to bless their husband and their marriage to join me!
I think it's pretty obvious I am a sucker for bible studies focused on marriage. I haven't read this book yet but I have read (and blogged about) many others over the years. Here are a few of my favorite studies to do independently, in groups or with your husband:

What's It Like to Be Married to Me? And Other Dangerous Questions by Linda Dillow. I am halfway through this book right now and woah, woah, woah. One night over Supper Club my girlfriends were raving about just starting this book for their new study and I ordered it right away to see what all the hype was about and join in on the conversation. This book will change you and ultimately your marriage. But be prepared to think about some tough questions!

The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller. I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who is married (newly or decades in), engaged or wants to get married in the future! I also love to give this book to my friends as an engagement gift.

The DNA of Relationships by Gary Smalley: This was the first study Matt and I did together in our married bible study right after we got hitched. We learned so much about each other through this study.

The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman: A must-read for ALL couples regardless of where you are in your relationship! I promise this will change your approach for showing and receiving love.

Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge: Every woman should read this book but I highly recommend it for women who are single, divorced or broken hearted. This was my family study I did before I met Matt.  I also highly recommend reading the men's version afterwards - Wild at Heart.

For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn: there were parts of this study I disliked or didn't agree with but still really enjoyed it overall. This is perfect for a women's group study or independently.
five. A cute little snap from our most recent Trader Joes run to stock up on wine, cheese and pouches!

And I'll leave you with this adorable clip! Since there are two Caroline's in the young toddler class they both go by their last names. So all of Caroline's friends and classmates at school have been calling her "Marcellino" all year. I can't get enough of listening to her say her name. Cracks me up.

Happy weekend friends!
